Best Brunch: Anthony David’s French Toast
Posted on 15. Mar, 2009 in Dining
I’ve never been attracted to French Toast. When it comes to brunch, I’m an Omelette guy. C’mon! Who can resist an Omelette’s flirtatious medley of fresh ingredients? Omelettes are just too damn sexy! I’m sorry French Toast, but your personality makes me want to go back to bed. However, this past weekend, I’ve decided to give French Toast another chance. On a quest to find the best brunch, a few Hobokenites have convinced me that at Anthony David’s (10th and Bloomfield Street), you can’t go wrong with anything on their menu. And if there’s anything I should try, it’s gotta be the French Toast.
HOBOKEN GUY’S BREAKDOWN

Restaurant: Anthony David’s
Name of Dish: French Toast
Price: $10.75
In cooking, like in all art disciplines, simplicity is the sign of perfection. And simplicity is what Anthony David’s has brought to this dish. Mouth-watering freshly-baked Challah bread is sliced 1 and a half inches thick into four generous pieces of heavenly goodness. Avoiding the common French Toast soft and mushy texture, this dish offers large chunks of bread with a little bit of that special crusty crunch with every bite. These golden-brown treats are topped with nutmeg, vanilla, coconut almond butter and sprinkled with sweet coconut shavings. Dip these babies in maple syrup, and you got yourself some happy taste buds that’ll make you crave for more. For $10.75, it’s one of the cheaper items on the brunch menu as well.
THE HG RATINGS

Do you know what sweet and crunchy heaven tastes like? Well, this is it? The simplicity of the flavors and ingredients is what really makes this a great dish. You’re really giving your taste buds a treat with that sweet, delicious combination of toasted coconut shavings and almond butter. Whether you love French Toast or hate it, but willing to give it a chance, try this dish! I guarantee, you’ll be back for more.

Split this dish with a friend or significant other. With the super-thick Challah bread, there’s enough toast to satisfy two people. Don’t think it’s enough? Ask the waiter to give you more for a little extra cost. But I doubt you’ll ever need to unless you eat like a champ.

They get a little fancy with their nutmeg spices, creating artsy-fartsy star diagrams on the side of the plate, while the slices of bread are simply stacked on top of each other. I would have liked to see them add some vibrant-colored fruit garnish to make the dish pop-out more. Also, they could have gotten a little more creative with the display of the French Toast. How about a French Toast cabin?

aaah hoboken guy hits it again. the crab cake was actually pretty good it was the first time i’ve ever had it before as well. also the fact that they were kind enough to wait for our dear friend joanne here who was late ^_^ but yea great atmosphere and great food. tad expensive so frozen monkey is still my go to everyday brunch especially a night after going out. but other than that, if i have some extra cash, and the will to walk a little more uptown than i wish this brunch was pretty high there.

mmmm! Hoboken guy, I have to say I recommended Anthony David’s for the Eggs Benedict and the atmosphere. I never expected to be blown away by your French Toast (which I most definitely helped myself to). This was pretty big for me. I don’t like sweets for breakfast, and I generally don’t like coconut.
Not only was your dish amazing, the toasted coconut pieces were the best part! Your french toast wins, if only slightly, over my eggs benedict. I shall challenge you again HG.
