Bartholomew Fair, NJ : A Comedy in Verse

Posted on 18. Jun, 2009 in Leisure

I don’t know about you but I love the 80’s. Who doesn’t? I mean, we had Madonna, Alf, Knight Rider, Trapper Keepers, Rubik’s Cubes, Slap Bands and most importantly, bad hair and hideous clothing! Well, if you’re looking to relive the days of side pony-tails and mesh tank top tees, then watching the whirlwind comedy production of Bartholomew Fair, NJ is a must! With only five hysterical actors performing over 20 different quirky characters, you’re in for 80 delirious minutes of delightful hijinks. Performing last summer, this theatrical treat is back by popular demand. The best part is that it’s FREE (donations will be accepted) and open to all ages!

LIES, DISGUISES, PUPPETS & 1985 NJ — IN VERSE!

Ladies and gentlemen, what could be worse
than sixty-eight minutes of nothing but verse?
We five humble actors raise words from the page
and bring them to life on this unadorned stage.
And you, lads and lasses, give us your attention
whilst we create characters rich in dimension.

So begins Bartholomew Fair, NJ.

Bartholomew Fair

THE SHOW

Gently inspired by Ben Jonson’s classic 1641 comedy, but set in north New Jersey in 1985, Bartholomew Fair, NJ follows John & Win Littlewit as they visit the fair to see a performance of John’s all-puppet adaptation of Romeo & Juliet. Along the way they are joined by Win’s mother, (The Dame), and her two suitors (a pastor and a “teamster”), assorted booth owners, a rich motor-mouth and his mute fiancée, a stuttering errand boy, a rocking balladeer, a puppeteer named Chester, a detective in disguise (and his wife), and others — all performed by a cast of 5 hysterically talented actors.

Written in rhyming couplets, the play pays homage to the five-act structure of Ben Jonson’s original, while taking delightful liberties and condensing the action to a frantic 80 minutes (including an Induction and Epilogue).

But that all happens soon, so spread your blanket, wool or kersey, and watch the wild shenanigans at Bartholomew Fair, New Jersey!

Written and directed by Billy Mitchell

TESTIMONIALS ACROSS THE WEB

“There is a lot to cringe about when talking about that decadent decade, which makes the play Bartholomew Fair, NJ even funnier for mocking the ridiculous excesses of the day….the enthusiastic actors make short work of this task, bringing layers of nuance and humor to the very clichéd roles they play. ” – Hudson Reporter

Bartholomew Fair

” Bartholomew Fair, NJ owes as much to Monty Python and Carol Burnett as it does to Ben Jonson’s original script, bringing a contemporary sensibility to the classic comedy suitable for all ages.” – The Theatre Company

Bartholomew Fair

“There were 5 actors, but maybe like 20 different characters, so you can imagine the quick costume changes and different voices and accents used. Everything in the play rhymed. It was like reading a rhyming poem…it was amusing and free and had a great view of New York’s skyline…I thought it was a good informal way to expose young children to the arts.-Rachelleb.com
