Best Bar Games & Rec Rooms: Black Bear’s Rock, Paper, Scissors Tournament

Posted on 13. May, 2009 in Leisure

To the Hoboken bar-hoppin’ veterans, Black Bear is well-known for the perfect spot to meet up with friends, watch some sports on 1 of the 42 television screens and enjoy a nice, big bucket of some of the most delicious wings in the mile square. And while they do have dart boards, what really makes this bar stand out as one of the best rec rooms is its weekly Rock, Paper, Scissors Tournament. Every Thursday night at 8:00pm, Black Bear teams up with Budweiser to sign up 32 intoxicated men and women to battle each other off in the most elegant and profound conflict resolution games of our childhood days. Check out this epic Thursday night battle!

Beads

Before the tournament begins, a lovely Budweiser rep walks around and helps you sign up for the event. As you commit to combat, she’ll hook you up with some nifty battle gear necklaces for good luck.

Bracket

After the first 32 people are signed up, the rep fills in the entire tournament bracket. Did you miss the sign-ups? Don’t worry, they’ll still take names and place you on the waiting list. If someone leaves or wimps out, you get first dibs. And from this experience, about five or six people forfeited their spot.

Rules

Jon, another Budweiser rep, makes sure he starts off every match-up with the basic rules. From the photo, you can really feel the intensity of the battle waiting to unleash itself.

Hand Shake

And of course, this fierce fight cannot commence without a friendly handshake between the two warriors. Look at the grip on that shake. Take it easy Katie!

Battle

ROCK!

Battle

PAPER! SCISSORS!

Battle

SHOOT!

Battle

I would say there were some pretty violent rock, paper, scissor match-ups out there.

Battle

The majority of the time, many of the contestants were super-aggressive, with their non-stop rock-throwing action. Luckily, everyone left the tournament safe and unharmed.

Jon makes sure that the winners move on to the next round.

Jon taking a break from the madness and helping his buddy Kevin cope with his loss in battle.

buddies

These Hobokenites were probably the most fun and outgoing group that joined the tournament. From left to right: Katie, John, Lauren, Amanda, Jill, Brian, Gerard and Craig.

bracket

Two final warriors were chosen to battle it off in three grueling championship rounds of the RPS throwdown. Chris and Mark were able to rise from the top!

Battle

Chris and Mark had a fierce and competitive brawl – one that may not go down as the best matchup in Rock, Paper Scissors history, but it was enough to get me pumped for the next tournament!

Battle

Katie looking on at the final match-up. It’s so funny how worried she looks. She was so into the competition that I am truly convinced that she is a member of the World Rock, Paper, Scissors Society.

2ndplace

Chris won second place, which awarded him some fresh swag from Budweiser.

Champ Award

And the Rock, Paper, Scissors champion is…. Mark!!! Mark not only won a $50 dollar American Express gift card, but an invitation to attend next week’s final tournament and a chance to win a trip to Las Vegas. That’s a kick-ass prize for a Rock, Paper, Scissors tournament, don’t cha think?

Champ Award

In the end, I placed an honorable 3rd. But next Thursday, I’m coming prepped and ready to take all of you guys on again! I should take some time to study and develop my own strategy. Or maybe all I need is The Official Rock Paper Scissors Strategy Guide.

Like I said, there’s probably a whole psychology to this! I.e. aggressive person throws rock (most of the times), air-headed type… perhaps paper? and as for cut-throat, well… scissors. I’m sure you can gauge by personality, facial features, and whatever else.
