Best Barbershops: Dominick & Vincent’s

As I tackle another mission to find the best of Hoboken barbershops, I figured I’d start out by letting you in on my secret hot spot for getting my hair trimmed, neat and perfectly groomed. When I first moved to Hoboken, I was unimpressed with the quality of cuts given by the unisex chain salons across the mile square. Luckily, I had a college friend who had recommended D&V to save me from the usual uneven sideburns. For nearly 50 years, Dominick and Vincent’s Barber Shop has provided the Hoboken community with precision cuts and fresh styles that will guarantee compliments.

THE CUT ANALYSIS

Although Dominick and Vincent are now retired, the two Italian brothers who started the shop still continue the time-honored traditions of barbery. The current barbers at D&V are mostly women who are pretty versatile at cutting mens, womens and childrens haircuts. Taking their time with every snap of their scissors, you could tell these barbers were trained under some kind of D&V Code of Barber Excellence — to be fast, efficient but meticulous in every move.

I definitely enjoy the sounds and feel of a good, old-fashioned electric razor cut and the traditional talcum-powder brush-down. But overall, my favorite part of the entire D&V experience is towards the end of the cut when the barber heads over to the old school machine to get a nice handful of hot shaving cream and carefully lathers your neck in preparation for one of the most awesome barbershop shaves ever.

With sharp precision, the barber took a fresh razor sharp blade and gently finishes me off with the traditional old school neck shave. The soothing feeling of the gentle shave made me feel so nice and relaxed, I was on the verge of a falling asleep.

When you step inside this time capsule, you literally feel like you just got on a ride on the DeLorean with Doc and Marty McFly and headed back to 1956.

You know you’re at one of the best barbershops when they use the best hair products. D&V is all about the Pinaud brand and it’s fine line of barber essentials for shaving and grooming.

With the red-white-and-blue striped barber pole to the old, hand-crank leather chairs, you can almost imagine hearing echos of conversations in Italian bounce against the walls. And yes, they even have those traditional big jars full of combs floating in the mysterious blue disinfect liquid. That’s a must at any “real” barbershop.

    I’ve been going to d&v’s for about 15 years now and have had haircuts by most of the barbers there and in my opinion the only one that is any good is Jocelyn. I’ve been butchered by the other ladies that work there and my boys hair has been poorly cut by the other ladies as well. We have gotten decent cuts from the older gentleman in the past but presently Jocelyn is the only one that I feel is any good.

    Alright, I’ve been in this town since the mid-eighties. I grew up getting haircuts at D&V, I lived across the street. It sucks now. Check out Hair I Am, I know it’s a horrible name. I promise that it’s truely the last vestage of an “old school ” barber in Hoboken.
