Best Brunch: Backyard Bistro’s Vermonster
Posted on 21. Jun, 2009 in Dining
Whether you’re recovering from a hangover or have the munchies for a delicious breakfast sandwich, do yourself a favor and head over to Hoboken’s hidden gem, Backyard Bistro and order their infamous sandwich known as the Vermonster. This decadent sandwich is packed with classic breakfast ingredients, but what really makes this sandwich stand out is its delicious, toasted pretzel bread. When I heard rave reviews from the owner about this popular choice among locals, especially after a night of drunken debauchery, I had to give the sandwich a try. And when you have other customers sitting around you glaring at your Vermonster, telling their waiter “I’ll have whatever he got”, you know you made the right choice. Buuuuurp! Excuse me.
HOBOKEN GUY’S BREAKDOWN
Restaurant: Backyard Bistro
Name of Dish: The Vermonster
Description: Eggs, Bacon, Sausage, Hash Browns and Cheddar Cheese on toasted Pretzel Bread
Price: $7.50

When you’re starving in the morning, and you’re craving a little bit of everything, the Vermonster is the perfect choice. You’ll be biting into a great combination of flavors from all of your favorite breakfast classics – eggs, crispy bacon, sausage and a layer of hash browns. Top those ingredients with cheddar cheese and house it with delicious toasted pretzel bread, and you got yourself a party for your tastebuds. The sandwich didn’t require any additional seasoning, as the salted flavor of the pretzel bread really makes everything come together.

I’ll warn you right now. This sandwich is monstrous. With a name like the Vermonster, I was expecting to be overwhelmed. And there’s no doubt that I was. You literally have to squeeze the sandwich to get it inside your mouth. And by the time you finish half the sandwich, you’ll be completely full. And that’s coming from a big eater myself, so for $7.50, you’re definitely getting a bang for your buck. And with a breakfast sandwich that good, I had no problem doggy-bagging the other half and having it for lunch.

With a unique, memorable name like the Vermonster, I would have liked to see the chefs go crazy with the food presentation. Perhaps they could have added more color to the dish with a sides of different sauces. I would have liked to see the vivid colors of the different ingredients of the dish pop out more. Even if it takes showing off that gooey melted cheddar cheese dripping from the sides. But do keep in mind that none of these factors stopped me from inhaling this sandwich.

OTHER RECOMMENDATIONS

Back’s Mac & Chez, $5.50 – bacon, scallion and a blend of multiple cheese
NOTE: Their mac and cheese appetizer dish is the BEST I’ve ever had in Hoboken so far. It would be sacrilegious to the Mac and Cheese Gods if I reviewed this dish in one sentence, so expect its own review very soon.

THE HOBOKEN GUY SIDEKICKS

I’d like to thank David, the owner and manager of Backyards Bistro for his hospitality and great customer service. David’s one of the most friendliest restaurant managers I’ve met in Hoboken thus far. From this day forward, you’re officially a Hoboken Guy sidekick my friend! And congrats on your restaurant recently being Zagat rated! Well-deserved.

I probably order from here 2-3 times a week for dinner, finally went in for brunch the other day. This sandwich is huge, and extremely tasty. Shared this with my wife who had the buritto which actually I liked better. Had just some great flavor. Waiting on your review of the mac n cheese there. Best I’ve had in my life anywhere, period. Has anyone else tried the burgers though? Definitly belongs in the best burger in hoboken discussion.

Went here over the weekend and not impressed. The staff is unhelpful and rude, the decor is tired, and our table was dirty. Their menu is pretty lackluster as well; I had the French Toast (which was burnt) and my wife had the Vermontster, based on all the reviews, which was decent, but it seems to me that a restaurant should have more of a claim to fame than an egg sandwich that they offer only 2 days a week.

I just did a search for this sandwich and came up here. I was telling a friend about this, it’s great. I get one every Sunday. Too funny you did a review of this, but it is spot on. This is everything you want in a breakfast, and the pretzel bread absolutely makes this sandwich. So good. I couldn’t do what I do Saturday nights if this wasn’t waiting for me the next day. My Sundays are better because of this sandwich, no joke.

This place was much better as the Cup Joint. The wait staff is practically brain dead and the steak I had with the steak and eggs was like chewing a piece of leather.

Seems Davids’ customer service is reserved for those that write reviews and take pictures of his food. Not for the people who stop in for breakfast.
After stopping by for breakfast on Sunday morning. My Wife ripped her shorts on some very sketchy wood work that was supposed to be a bench. This bench was not finished properly and the jagged edge ripped the material. After pointing this out to the staff they offered nothing to us. I said “should I send the repair bill to you or what should we do here?” And was given the usual response from untrained and inept customer service people,”the manager is not here let me take down your details and I will have him call you.” So now a day and half later still no call. And messages left with the day staff have been relayed to the owner David Herling “I told him when I saw him earlier” was the response I got. The owner seems way too busy to make a phone call to an irate customer. Must be nice to be in a position to not have to care of your customers. better hope your food gets good reviews on here.
