Best Brunch: Turning Point’s Huevos Rancheros

For a comfortable diner-like atmosphere and an ambiance to make your dining experience feel like you’re at home, make your way towards the Hudson River and visit the infamous Turning Point. Enjoy the sensational views of the New York City skyline with their spacious outdoor seating or their tastefully decorated interiors with natural wood flooring and bright traditional colors. Compared to most Hoboken restaurants, they’ve got one of the largest brunch menus, with a huge variety of unique culinary creations that will make you drool. And for all your big eaters out there like me, I highly recommend the Grande Huevos Rancheros. It’s a fiesta in your belly!

Calling all big eaters! You you gotta try this eggceptional classic Mexican dish with a unique twist. I’m used to the traditional style of plating for the Huevos Rancheros, with sides of scrambled eggs, salsa, black beans, cheese and steak and placing a mixture of all those ingredients into those delicious corn tortillas. So at first, I was a little hesitant to try a Mexican dish in a non-Mexican restaurant. But the Turning Point chefs concocted a delectable version of this classic that will literally start a fiesta in your mouth just after the first bite.

Imagine a huge toasted corn tortilla topped with loads of diced potatoes, chipotle peppers, chorizo sausage, onions, black beans, cilantro and avocado with your choice of 3 eggs just the way you like them (I recommend scrambled). Oh, and to top it all off, don’t forget the melted cheese and sour cream! And when it comes to taste, this dish went beyond my expectation, which is probably the result of every single one of their fresh ingredients. With each bite, your taste buds are treated with a blast of true Mexicano flavors. The sweetness of the chorizo sausage and light heat from the chipotle peppers were an excellent combination with the scrambled eggs and rich gooey-ness of the mixed cheeses.

When this dish arrived at my table, I was overwhelmed with the quantity of grub. I didn’t say this was the healthiest dish, which in case you were wondering, they do have a healthy section on the menu. So I have to warn you, this dish is really heavy and isn’t for the light brunch eaters out there. There’s enough portion to share this for 2 to 3 people and maybe even or it as an appetizer or side dish along with your meal. The generous size of this dish is probably one of the largest portions I’ve seen for any brunch dish thus far. Overall, most of their dishes were delicious and gave you big portions without attacking your wallet. I was very impressed with the prices being cheaper than most restaurants that sit by the water.

The one thing I loved about this dish is the way it was presented. The dish wasn’t meant for wrapping into smaller tortillas, but instead was created like a salad mixture of all the huevos rancheros ingredients. The colors from the cheese, eggs, cilantro, and tomatoes developed a rainbow of yellows, greens and reds making this dish look even more appetizing.

Extra Tip: Usually, this place always has a wait on weekends. They don’t take reservations but you can call ahead to tell them your coming in. This makes waiting time a little quicker, as your name gets priority if there’s many groups waiting to get a table. We ended up waiting 30 minutes. That’s how busy this place is.
