Best Brunch: Amanda’s Croissant French Toast

After inhaling the amazing French Toast at Anthony David’s, I scavenged across the Mile Square in search for other French Toast cuisines that would not only satisfy this new brunch obsession, but to see if any restaurants offered the same level of deliciousness. I stopped by Amanda’s Restaurant, asseemed to be getting a lot of Twitter buzz for their brunch and it just so happened that I ran into Croissant French Toast while I was there. Excuse me while I take a moment of silence to remember the heavenly taste.

When it comes to French pastries, who isn’t a fan of the croissant. Amanda’s Restaurant serves them just the way I like em’. Delivered fresh from a local bakery, Amanda’s serves these golden bad boys toasted with that perfect puffy and flaky texture. The special fruit compote, a delicious sugar syrup made with fresh seasonal blueberries is drizzled on top of the croissants, infusing these crescent-shaped cakes with the sweet goodness that will make any sugar addict smile. To really enjoy all the flavors, sandwich your fork with a slice of the croissant, blueberries and honeydew and soak that baby with the fruit sauce. Nom nom nom. Yum! However, although I highly recommend this dish, I still believe Anthony David’s French Toast kicks butt when it comes to taste ratings.

The sweet flavors of the fruit compote is a great complement for the warm, buttery croissant toast, making you crave more after very bite. I love the simplicity of all the ingredients because it allows all the individual flavors to carry it’s own presence as it hits your taste buds. Powdered sugar is sprinkled on top of the croissants to give an extra sweet kick to it. There’s room for improvement, as I can see this dish add a combination of fruits to create a mixed fruit compote. How about some warm, peaches, pears or apricots topped with a little bit of brown sugar?

Amanda’s gives you just enough food to be satisfied, with two very large croissants, topped with warm blueberries and a side garnish of honeydew and grapes. But for some reason I still felt like something was missing after I was all done. I wanted them to surprise me with something extra, like a variety of other fruit a or a small bar of dark chocolate.

The puddles of blueberry fruit syrup that’s drizzle throughout the plate adds an appetizing beauty to the dish that makes you want to lick the plate clean. I wanted them to make the dish more playful. Maybe they could have given me a small bowl to hold the fruit compote and a ladle to drizzle the syrup when needed. This would have also helped reduce the soggyness of the croissant towards the end of the meal. Adding other fruits would not only have added more flavor options, but also more color vibrancy.
