Best of Hoboken Summer Events 2009

Summer in Hoboken is my favorite time of the year. It’s that time where more residents are outside enjoying the outdoor restaurant and bar settings, children are playing in the parks and most of all, the city offers tons of free outdoor cultural and recreational events. From outdoor movies and theatrical performance to family fun nights and a Sinatra impersonation contest, Hoboken residents will have a great variety of local activities to keep them entertained.

Henry Hudson Quadricentennial Celebration: Waterfront Museum

In celebrating the 400th Anniversary of the voyage of Henry Hudson’s Half Moon and the discovery of the Hudson River, the Waterfront Museum and Showboat Barge comes to Hoboken for a limited time only. Originally based out in Brooklyn, NY, this unique summer attraction will be docking NJ Transit’s Historic Erie Lackawanna Plaza. Events will showcase live bands, circus shows, boat tours, educational exhibitions for the kids and parties.

Our Lady of Grace (OLG) Nitefest 2009

Our Lady of Grace and St. Joseph’s Church will be hosting a kick off to their fourth annual Funfest festival called “Nitefest”. Indulge in delicious food from Joey’s BBQ and Bernadette Grace’s Kitchen and drink beer at their special beirgarten tent while enjoying music and dancing.

Our Lady of Grace (OLG) Funfest 2009

Our Lady of Grace and St. Joseph will be hosting their 4th annual OLG Funfest. Bring family, friends and kids to Church Square Park for some excellent food, arts and crafts(face painting), 50/50 vendors, pony rides, carnival games. Childrens events will feature the Fuzzy Lemons to bring some toe-tapping tunes, whimsical lyrics and zany audience participation

Art in the Park

Wednesdays in Elysian Park – Hudson St. bet. 10th & 11th Sts.

To all the Hoboken moms and sitters out there, give your children (toddlers to 6 years old) some morning creative activities with Art in the Park every Mondays and Wednesdays. From finger painting or to making necklaces with colored pasta, give you kid some creative spark for FREE! All children must be accompanied by a guardian and should wear clothes that can be spilled on. In case of rain, Monday classses will held at the Multi-Service Center at 2nd and Grand streets. Wednesday classes will be cancelled due to rain.

Movies Under the Stars

Enjoy FREE Outdoor Movies taking place at Pier A Park, overlooking the beautiful Manhattan Skyline, located on First Street and Frank Sinatra Drive in Hoboken. This year, they got some of my favorites flicks, from Ironman, Dark Knight and Kung Fu Panda. However, I’m also looking forward to watching some movies that I haven’t seen yet – from Horton Hears a Who and Coraline in 3D. Come early with your blanket or comfy chair and get a good seat. Concession stands will be open at 6:30pm offering hot dogs, soda and popcorn.

Sinatra Idol Contest

One of the most interesting and entertaining events of the summer, get ready for the Sinatra Idol Contest! See who ranks as Hoboken’s very best Sinatra “style singer. All you Sinatra impersonators, register by June 5th by emailing hoboculturalaffairs@gmail.com. Please email your mailing address, what you do for a living & a short statement about how you got started singing Sinatra tunes. In case of rain, the Sinatra Idol Contest will take place at the Theater at DeBaun Auditorium, located at 5th & Hudson Street, on the campus of Stevens Institute of Technology.

Family Fun Nights

Who needs NYC Broadway when you can get live theatrical performances by local Hudson Country theatre companies. Talented actresses and actors will take on multiple showings of Shakespeare classics. I’ve seen a friend perform in the show Bartholomew Fair and it was super-awesome!

Hoboken kids are lucky these days. They get fun festivals, family fun nights and a Kiddiepalooza! Take your kids out to this event featuring free fun-filled activities including live music, games, rides, face painting, and pony rides. And to top it all off, kids will get to see a performance by the popular Fuzzy Lemons!
