Summer in Hoboken is my favorite time of the year. It’s that time where more residents are outside enjoying the outdoor restaurant and bar settings, children are playing in the parks and most of all, the city offers tons of free outdoor cultural and recreational events. From outdoor movies and theatrical performance to family fun nights and a Sinatra impersonation contest, Hoboken residents will have a great variety of local activities to keep them entertained.

Memorial Day has always been a day of meditation for me. Although I haven’t lost anyone important in the line of duty, I did have a grandfather who once served in the U.S. Navy in World War II, as well as a few close friends that are currently fighting in Iraq. I can’t even imagine what it would feel to lose someone important, but as we’ve all seen, many people have experienced loss. I was honored to attend this year’s Hoboken Memorial Day Parade, as I got a glimpse of those who have fought for us and remembering the fallen soldiers who have died for our nation’s service. Every Thursday night at 8:00pm, Black Bear teams up with Budweiser to sign up 32 intoxicated men and women to battle each other off in the most elegant and profound conflict resolution games of our childhood days. Check out this epic Thursday night battle!

Many Hoboken friends offered recommendations for beginning my quest with the most obvious of playful watering holes. With that being said, let’s start this mission for the best bar games and rec rooms with my friend’s local favorite dive bar, 8th Street Tavern.

Although the days of jumping into a ball pit at Chuck E Cheese are over, we still need some form of leisure to keep us entertained . And with over 60+ local bars across the mile square, most of us can pretty much walk a few blocks from our home, hit up a bar and enjoy a nice cold brewsky while talking sports with friends or neighbors. But ultimately, when we’re bar crawling, we need more than just alcohol and TV screens to keep us amused while we’re getting intoxicated.
